For Winter semester 2011, Ali, Hannah, Lene, and Misty entertained pet cockroaches. Madagascar hissing cockroaches to be exact. Zeus (the biggest) and Hercules. We kept them for one week each on rotation; fed them, and observed them. Once in a while we would do small experiments with them, and record their behavior. This was all for our Life Science Project in Dr. Cantrell's class, and a very interesting project it was indeed. Have fun reading about our experience.

Do Cockroaches Burrow?
Tuesday 15, 2011 After I spooked Hercules when trying to get him on my hand, he burrowed under the dirt as best he could. I need to look up if that is a survival technique cockroaches usually use.
I believe they do. I received a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach as a White Elephant gift, and I woke up in the morning to find him missing in the inescapable tank which I had placed him in. The tank was full of loose soil, easy to dig in. Maybe he was cold? I'm not sure, I just hope I find him sometime soon.
